as the first asian-american mayor in san francisco history. mayor lee championed balancing the budget to keep san francisco safe, solvents, and successful. he reformed city pensions. his focus is on economic development, job creation, and building san francisco's future. a great job, especially for helping out families. we want to keep families here. i also wanted to mention a little bit of his past. he was born in 1952 in the beacon hill neighborhood of seattle, washington. his parents immigrated to the u.s. from china and the 1930's. his father fought in world war ii and worked as a cook. he passed away when the mayor was 15. his mother was a seamstress and a waitress. mayor lee has five siblings, he graduated from college in maine, he also went to uc- berkeley law school and finished in 1978. he and his wife have two daughters. i also want to mention, prior to becoming mayor, one of the key points in his contributions to the community is after he completed law school, he worked as a managing attorney for the san francisco asian law caucus, where he was an advocate for affordable housing an

and 58 of them are local restaurants and of those 58, 50 are san francisco-based restaurants. we had 16 breweries out there this year and beer lands, four of those breweries, they're all northern california with the exception of one. but four were from san francisco proper. and then the wineries, we have 33 wineries out there and they're all from northern california. we're very supportive of the local businesses throughout san francisco, throughout the bay area, and we pay particular attention to the neighborhoods that surround the park because we do understand that those neighborhoods are being impacted most by this event. you know, gordos burritos, [speaker not understood], and they have an extraordinary big weekend in the brick and mortar store as well as on the festival grounds. we have some vendors here today who will speak to that as well as [speaker not understood] feingold who oversees the local restaurants and the restaurant just down the street. >> i appreciate that and that commitment. one of the things i do want to be clear about, the area that i'm really concerned about is

in washington dc with their celebrations but let us san francisco celebrate -- mayor aleato and our wonderful history here and allow us to do a preliminary launch and so that's what we're attempting to do tonight and celebrate with you this launch of italian culture. it's very meaningful for us to did that year. we have a lot to celebrate. let me just say that painters, scrptdures, poets, musicians, designers, mathematicians, great architects of the italian country have come here to san francisco. we have experienced so much of the italian talent here in san francisco. that's why we wanted to be celebrating here and i am so glad to be joined not only by senator leno and assembly man amaino and david chiu and scott wiener as well. they all want to get in on this great celebration because it's wonderful for our city. i have often said our city and our strength is our international status and we do that with all the sister cities, with all of the flag raisings, but this is kind of new. what i said to our counsel general it's special because it's kind of bringing forth the things that we h

the embarcadero in san francisco. >> reporter: if you like splashing around in water, head to those low lying spots today you won't be disappointed especially if yesterday is any indication. these are from marin city where there was flooding they saw flooding on bike trails, parking lots up to the doorsteps of some businesses. today is expected to be the peak. king tides happen when the sun and moon align to the gravitational pull brings more water on to the shore. people knew it was happening but still surprised by the amount of water. >> there was flooding, i had no idea it was that bad. >> how long have you been riding here? >> i right everyday or try. to making this one work and restoring the san francisco water use for use by all bay area residents. i think what is also important to you we believe that the project as presented will ensure new and ongoing maritime activity on all three sides of the pier site. certainly we have talked about the san francisco fire department, fire station, fire boat berths, water taxis, ferry service, guest docks and my personal favorite human powered craft, that will be operating on the south side of the pier. we have a very special interest in creating the best arena ever envisioned as a entertainment and sports facility that will be the home for warrior fans. they're amazing group and show up in thick and thin and mostly thin in the last 20 years that we're trying to change and this will set the course for a very successful franchise that we can all embrace for the next 50 years for the warriors. one of the things that always amazed me from a distance is the fact that san francisco has never had a world class multi-purpose arena. there's no city half itself size in america that doesn't have this

of which is our heart and soul of san francisco angelo aleato and to kickoff the year of italian culture and mr. mayor you mentioned the different varieties but we shouldn't leave out the sciences as well so a lot to celebrate. when i was first introduced to our relatively new counsel general by angela he said "he's one of us" and angela said "i'm not so quite sure counsel general" but i shared with him when i took my seat on the board of supervisors i got a call from jay leno. true story. he called me to congratulate me on my public office and glad to know that other lenos were fairing well and asked if we had family in common and he laughed when i said i was part of his russian jewish part of the family so i left it with that. this is particularly appropriate to do this in san francisco and san francisco is a italian city and always has been and will be and to get things going i have seen you put in some years of service in telea eve and familiar with israel's politics you can get into san francisco's politics and i brought this and i know senator will say something as well and we

that from the mayor already and part of it is san francisco moving forward in a way that other cities just don't do. first and foremost other cities do not pass general obligation bonds of this type for a park and none for waterfront parks so we are already ahead of game that way, and we are proud of the generosity of the electoral for supporting that vision. secondly we don't have many parks and in san francisco there are a couple of open spaces but not in the middle much heavy industry use. this is a working port. work is going on as we speak but it's a place for habitat and a place for our own restoration so it makes it absolutely wonderful for that and you can get here by almost every mode. i would like to say you could take the train and the historic train and i encourage you to ride your bikes and bring your dog. this is the first dog sanctioned area and we're proud of that and i want to say thank you to all the people that made it happen and as mayor lee alluded to it's a lot of people and byron and the rest of the committee and lead by karen paris and friends at the park conse

by an incident in union square. i want to take a moment and thank the san francisco police department for your input. if we pass legislation to require additional security requirements and plans. we pass legislation to give the entertainment commission more tools to shut down those handful of clubs that have often given a bad name to the rest of the industry. we passed legislation to pass for the first time a party registry. and we pass legislation to ensure a minimum level of security. all of that being said, the great news is today for that for whatever reason, in part because of good legislation and part because of good law enforcement and in part because of the good work that you all are doing, it is much improved. i know lager get woken up on sunday mornings by tv reporters asking me to comment on the latest shooting. we have an opportunity to ensure that san francisco has the greatest and most vibrant nightlife of any major city in the country. i want to thank my colleague scott wiener for helping to showcase the importance of the other nine to five economy. the impact of all that you do
